Pittsburgh pitcher Paul Skins and New York Yankees pitcher Lewis Hill have been named the top rookies in Major League Baseball (MLB) this year.
The MLB office announced today (Nov. 19) that Skins was named the winner of the Jackie Robinson Rookie of the Year award, which recognizes the most improved rookie over the course of a season, in the National League (NL) and Hill in the American League.
Skins, who joined Pittsburgh with the No. 1 overall pick in last year's MLB First-Year Player Draft, made his big league debut on May 12 of this year and went 11-3 with a 1.96 ERA and 170 strikeouts in 23 games.
Skins, who received 23 first-place votes and seven second-place votes in the Rookie of the Year voting, narrowly edged out San Diego outfielder Jackson Merrill, 메이저사이트 who received seven first-place votes and 23 second-place votes.
“Led by a fastball that topped 160 miles per hour, the Skins struck out more than 170 batters and maintained a sub-one-run ERA for the first time since 1913, when ERAs became an official record,” the MLB office noted on its official portal.
Notably, Skins took the mound for the NL in this year's All-Star Game, becoming the first rookie pitcher to start an All-Star Game in 29 years since Hideo Nomo in 1995.
Lewis Hill of the New York Yankees earned American League Rookie of the Year honors for his performance, going 15-7 with a 3.50 ERA as he earned the team's starting spot.
Hill becomes the 10th Yankees rookie to win the award, joining 2017 Rookie of the Year Aaron Judge.
